Man jailed for strangling girlfriend near Peterborough
Adam Marchant sentenced for violent attacks and driving offences
A man has been jailed after subjecting his girlfriend to a violent ordeal, including strangling her until she lost consciousness.
Adam Marchant, 32, of West End, Whittlesey, near Peterborough, attacked the victim in February following an argument about her contacting her child’s father regarding childcare arrangements.
While driving home from a friend’s house, Marchant, who was a passenger in the car, grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to collide with a metal flood gate. He then dragged the victim into the passenger seat and drove the vehicle home at high speed.
Once home, Marchant pinned the victim against another car, placing his hands around her throat and causing her to pass out. When she regained consciousness and tried to escape, he restrained her in a headlock and dragged her back into the house, confiscating her phone to prevent her from calling for help.
In her attempts to flee, the victim faced further threats as Marchant locked the door, brandished a knife, and threatened to kill himself. She managed to seize the keys after he placed them down, eventually locking herself in her car and calling the police.
In September, Marchant pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional strangulation, driving while disqualified, and using a vehicle without third-party insurance.
At Cambridge Crown Court on 21st November, he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, handed a ten-year restraining order forbidding contact with the victim, and disqualified from driving for two years and four months.
Detective Constable Elouise Hicks, who investigated the case, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, and I commend her bravery in escaping and contacting us.
"Domestic abuse in any form is unacceptable, and we will continue to do everything we can to bring offenders to justice and protect victims.”
