Man jailed for violent attempted robbery in Cambridge
Victim threatened with a knife and attacked on Mill Road
A man has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after taking part in a violent attempted robbery in Cambridge last summer.
Craig Squires, 43, of New Street, Cambridge, was jailed at Peterborough Crown Court on 23rd January after admitting to his involvement in the attack.
The incident occurred on 24th July on Mill Road at about 4.35pm. The victim, a 42-year-old man, parked his electric e-scooter along the road when he was approached by a group of men, including Squires, who showed an interest in the vehicle.
The victim partially locked the scooter and began to walk away but one of the men attempted to tamper with the lock moments later. When the victim returned to confront the group, he was surrounded.
One man threatened the victim with a knife, holding it against his back, before punching him in the jaw, knocking him to the ground and kicking him repeatedly.
The attack was disturbed when a passing couple began filming the incident, prompting the group to disperse. The footage showed Squires grabbing the scooter and attempting to claim it as his.
Officers later identified Squires from the recording and arrested him.
Detective Constable Deborah Vyse from Cambridgeshire Police said:
“This was a frightening and unprovoked attack on a man who simply challenged the group about his own property. The level of violence used was completely unacceptable.
We are grateful to the members of the public who intervened and filmed the incident, enabling us to identify Squires and bring him before the courts.”
