Adam Barrett has been named assistant head coach at Cambridge United and will officially begin work on Monday 23 June when the squad returns for pre-season training.

Barrett joins Cambridge United following his departure from Millwall in December 2024. He previously worked on the coaching staff at Millwall under current Cambridge head coach Neil Harris, where he was part of the team that achieved promotion to League One. During his seven-and-a-half years at Millwall, Barrett also twice took on the role of caretaker manager.

Barrett said, “I am absolutely delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started. It’s a Club that wants to push on and move forward and that is reflected in the conversations I have had with Neil and Mark. I want to be part of the journey. I think I can come in and really help and it’s an exciting new challenge for myself.”

Neil Harris added, “I am delighted to welcome Adam to Cambridge United. He is somebody I have known as a work colleague, assistant head coach and a competitor on the football pitch over many seasons. I believe we have brought in the highest calibre candidate and personality to support me and the current staff. He is a man with huge integrity, vast coaching experience and a real drive to develop player and win football matches.”

Director of Football Mark Bonner said, “Adam’s experience, knowledge and passion for developing players and teams will be invaluable as we build the team. His strong working relationship with Neil over multiple seasons will ensure chemistry in the backroom team which we believe will be a major asset in creating a cohesive coaching unit. Their understanding and trust in each other will help drive consistency and clarity in our approach. Adam’s energy and commitment throughout our discussions align with the club’s values, and we’re confident he’ll play a pivotal role in helping us achieve our goals. I believe he is an excellent addition to our team.”

As a player, Barrett is best known for his time with Southend United, where he made 351 appearances across two spells and helped the club win three promotions. He retired from playing in 2017 before moving into coaching.
