YTL Arena Bristol opening delayed
Covid and issues in the construction industry are being blamed
The opening of a major music venue in Bristol has been delayed until the end of 2025 at the earliest, it has been confirmed.
Originally it was thought the YTL Arena in Filton in South Gloucestershire would open next year, but now those behind its creation say a mix of Covid and "general challenges in the construction market" mean that has been pushed back until either late 2025 or even early 2026.
The venue, being created inside an old aircraft hanger at what once was Filton Airfield, was also originally due to have a capacity of 17,000.
However, that has now been increased to 19,000, we're told.
"We will have the region’s largest column-less exhibition and convention halls with 6,000m2 of floor area, height clearance of 21 metres and banqueting capacity for 4,000 people, together with a flexible hub for entertainment, film, TV and music rehearsals," a statement from YTL Developments reads.
"As both owner and operator of YTL Arena Bristol, our ambition has always been to create a vibrant and unique mix of bars and lounges in our design which showcase the very best of Bristol.
"That is why we have been working with Bristol based interior designers Studio B."
Bristol Arena history
The creation of a music venue in Bristol of this scale has been an ongoing saga for years.
Originally a plot of land on Temple Island near Temple Meads train station was earmarked as the ideal location for one.
However, that idea was abandoned by Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees in 2018 when a value for money report suggested the plan was not viable.
That land is now set to be used to create new homes, a hotel, conference centre, shops and restaurants as part of a wider scheme to regenerate the whole Temple Quarter area.
YTL Arena
Alongside the arena itself, YTL Developments are working to create a large public park out the front and thousands of new homes in the surrounding area, in a new community known as Brabazon.
"Equivalent in size to Bristol's Castle Park, this new landmark public space will span 15 acres, including a 2.5 acre lake surrounded by a floating boardwalk," a statement from YTL Developments says.
"There will be mature trees, lakeside coffee spots and outdoor exercise areas for adults, and an adventure playground for kids."
Construction on the park is due to start this year with parts due to start opening in 2024.
Meanwhile a new train station being built to service the whole area, is due to open in 2026.
