Bristol Rovers have appointed former Leeds and Rotherham boss Steve Evans as their new head coach on a contract until the end of the season.

The Sky Bet League Two club sacked Darrell Clarke after a 10th straight league defeat on Saturday, 3-0 at home to Swindon, saw them drop into the relegation zone.

Rovers' director of football Ricky Martin said: "Steve brings a wealth of experience at this level, a deep understanding of the demands of EFL football, and a proven ability to get the best out of his players."

Evans, who will be joined at the Memorial Stadium by assistant head coach Paul Raynor, has won promotion five times during his managerial career, back-to-back with Rotherham and also with Stevenage, Crawley and Boston.

The 63-year-old Glaswegian, whose second spell as Rotherham boss ended in the sack in March this year, will take charge of Rovers for the first time at Crewe on Friday.

Evans added: "I'm really looking forward to it here. It's a huge club, but I'm very mindful of the immediate challenge and I'm looking forward to getting down to work."
