A serving police officer has appeared in court charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Pc Dan Parsons, 32, who is based in South Gloucestershire with Avon and Somerset Police, appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He did not indicate a plea to a charge that he caused serious injury to Saara Akatwijuka, 19, on November 24 last year.

Parsons was on duty and driving an unmarked police car responding to an emergency incident at about 6.20pm.

The court heard how the vehicle collided with Ms Akatwijuka at a roundabout in Emersons Green, South Gloucestershire.

She is alleged to have received serious injuries, which resulted in her being taken to hospital and later discharged.

District Judge Kirsty Allman told Parsons: "I have sent the matter for trial at Gloucester Crown Court.

"The next hearing will be on August 12 at Gloucester Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

"In the meantime, you must keep in contact with your solicitor to be prepared for that hearing at the crown court.

"I am going to release you on unconditional bail to attend back at the crown court on August 12."

Parsons, wearing a grey suit, spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

When asked if he was indicating a plea to the charge, he replied: "I have no indication at this time."

Sadie Waits appeared for the prosecution during the hearing, while Sam Jones represented Parsons.
