The Marine Lake in Weston-Super-Mare has reopened after a grey seal was spotted resting on a causeway yesterday afternoon (18 October).

The Lake was temporarily shut off as rangers and wildlife experts worked out how to get it to safety.

In a statement this afternoon, the Marine Lake team said: "We are happy to confirm that after an enjoyable overnight stay in the popular tidal lake, the seal decided to leave of its own accord at around 9am on this morning's high tide.

"The seafront team waited until low tide this afternoon to check that the seal had definitely gone before reopening the lake and the surrounding footpaths.

"Aligned with advice we received from wildlife experts, the seal was monitored at a distance last night.

"Thank you for your cooperation and understanding."

In a post last night, the Weston Seafront said: "Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare – temporary closure (Wednesday 18 October).

"We have taken the decision to temporarily close Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare and the footpaths around the lake with immediate effect.

"This is to enable our seafront team to deal with a grey seal in the lake.

"Our seafront rangers are on site and keeping people out of the way. Our priority is to protect people and wildlife.

"We all love seals but please do not come down to take a look as this is likely to cause the seal more distress. You will also be directed away from the area. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

"We are working with wildlife experts and the situation is being managed.

"We'll update again when the situation is resolved, and the lake and footpaths are reopen."

You can check out the video of the seal on the Marine Lake's Facebook Page.
