38-year-old from Telford area confirmed to have died after incident at HMP Bristol

Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation following the death of Daniel Childs earlier this week

The man who was found dead at HMP Bristol has been confirmed by police to be 38-year-old Daniel Childs from the Telford area.

34-year-old Michael Harkin, who's also an inmate, appeared before Magistrates today following an incident on Monday (June 5).

He was found dead by prison staff at approximately 9.30am, when the emergency services were called out.

An initial post-mortem investigation found Childs died of neck injuries.

Harkin was charged with murder alongside a section 18 wounding with intent offence relating to a separate alleged incident on the same day and has been remanded in custody.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: "Our family liaison officers have spoken with the family of Daniel Childs who was found deceased at HMP Bristol on Monday 5 June.

"At this time the family do not wish to issue any public statement or tribute other than to request their privacy is respected."

Harkin has been charged with murder and separately, wounding with intent - and following his Magistrates Court appearance today (June 9), will appear at Bristol Crown Court on Monday (June 12).

Police ask anyone with information relating to these incidents to call police on 101 and quote reference number 5223131135.
