New Labour MP Gideon Amos opens Somerset Armed Forces day event

Somerset is celebrating Armed Forces Day, with veterans being honoured in the town of Taunton.

There's activities celebrating the military at Taunton's Vivary Park from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Gideon Amos, the new MP for Taunton and Wellington, opened the event in his first official engagement.

Fittingly, Mr Amos volunteers as an instructor with Somerset Army Cadet Force and was previously a member of the Territorial Army.

A flypast by the iconic Red Arrows is scheduled for between 1.15pm and 1.45pm, as those commemorating the event will be honoured.

The event is set to draw in thousands of spectators and well-wishers, along a number of other activities including exhibitions and stands.
