Fire breaks out on the SS Great Britain

Firefighters have extinguished a small blaze that broke out on the SS Great Britain this afternoon.

Crews from Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the scene at Bristol's Great Western Dockyard.

A spokesperson from SS Great Britain said smoke was detected in the fo'c'sle while controlled hot works were taking place.

They add that 'everyone is safe and there is minimal damage in a small, contained area of the ship'.

The fire was put out by 3.38pm, with crews confirming that it was accidental.

A spokesperson from SS Great Britain said they are 'very grateful to Avon Fire and Rescue for their very swift attendance':

"Essential welding repairs (hot works) were being carried out in the fo'c'sle. This work is a known risk, and the Trust’s comprehensive fire detection procedures have prevented damage."

The historical ship will be fully open tomorrow (18 December) for the Victorian Christmas Weekend.
