Engineering firm Dyson says it's going to spend £100 million pounds creating a new research and development centre in Bristol.

The company has announced the news today (3 May) saying it will be home to hundreds of software and AI engineers working on future products and global technology for the firm.

They plan to create it opposite Castle Park in the city centre by redeveloping an existing building by Bristol Bridge.

Commenting on the new building, Jake Dyson, Dyson’s Chief Engineer, said: “To us, sensors, apps, and connectivity are about more than simply adding function to the machine.

"They transform how we support our owners and assess autonomously how to improve a product’s performance over its lifetime to ensure they are at peak performance.

"We have significant ambitions and will hire increasing numbers of software, AI and connectivity engineers as part of a growing global team.

"The new Dyson Technology Centre in Bristol will be a vital hub contributing to Dyson’s connected future.”

Last year Dyson announced plans to create a Robotics Centre at its Hullavington Airfield Campus in Wiltshire, where the firm has restored RAF hangars and transformed them into R&D labs focused on wearables and robotics.

The company says this new commitment to Bristol "reflects the city’s position as an international hub for software and digital skills" and will help with recruitment.

As well as the Hullavington base, Dyson also has a presence in Malmesbury and London in the UK, employing more than 3,500 people in all.

The Malmesbury Campus is also home to the Dyson Institute, where undergraduates are able to study for a BEng engineering degree.

We have asked Bristol City Council if they have received a planning application.
