Crash on M5 closes road near Cribbs Causeway

Emergency services attended the scene which closed part of the northbound carriageway

A major crash has closed a part of the M5 near Bristol today.

One person has been taken to hospital following the incident which involved one vehicle and the central reservation, according to Avon Fire and Rescue.

It happened between Avonmouth and Cribbs Causeway, with emergency services having to close the northbound carriageway, as well as one lane of the southbound carriageway, as they attended the scene.

Drivers are urged to use alternative routes, or allow for extra time for their journeys in the area.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We were called at 11:17 to a road traffic collision on the M5 near Cribbs Causeway.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle, a double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, a responding officer, hazardous area response team, an operations officer and a doctor to the scene. We conveyed one patient by land to Bristol Royal Infirmary.”

A spokesperson from Avon Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from Avonmouth, Clevedon, Pill and Portishead were called to reports of a road traffic collision at 11:17.

"On arrival, crews found one collision involving a vehicle and the central reservation.

"With ambulance, police and highways colleagues in attendance, crews spent time making the vehicle safe whilst a casualty was treated by ambulance crews.

"The affected stretch of motorway has been closed to allow for emergency crews to work."

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police added: "Emergency services were called to the scene of a single-vehicle collision on the M5 at approximately 11.15am this morning (Tuesday 15 August).

"One person is being taken to hospital by paramedics.

"The northbound carriageway has been shut between junctions 18A (Avonmouth) and 17 (Cribbs Causeway). One lane has also been closed southbound."
