A teacher at a Bristol school has died following an avalanche on Ben Nevis on the 30th December.

Ashton Park Secondary School have confirmed Mark Bessell, who was 48, passed away following the accident.

In a statement, Mr Bessell was called a "huge part" of the school community who will be "missed, but never forgotten".

The mountain rescue team involved in the operation posted an update online, where they say they were called out after receiving reports from Police Scotland about an avalanche involving two casualties.

One casualty had sustained fatal injuries and the other was seriously injured, having slid approximately 600 meters.

The headteacher of Ashton Park, Mr Uffendell says the thoughts of the schools community are with Mark's family, including his wife Charlie - who works as Head of Science at Ashton Park.

Students and members of staff at the school are being offered external support and guidance through an Educational Psychology team.
