Bristol Airport has opened a brand-new charging hub.

It's to be used by airlines and their business partners, thanks to collaborating with airline Jet2 and funding from the Airport Carbon Transition (ACT) Programme.

The ACT Programme was a fund launched to help kick-start initiatives across the South West to fast-track decarbonisation, thanks to its support of initiatives and projects to help reduce direct and indirect emissions from airport infrastructure.

Bristol Airport announced the scheme - with a starting fund of £250,000.

This cash was then bid for by a number of businesses and organisations through an application scheme - with projects considered through a tendering process.

Since the scheme was launched, Bristol Airport is reported to have collaborated with five organisations from the first round of funding - Buckinghamshire New University, easyJet, Jet2.com, The National Wildflower Centre and Johns Associates Limited.

In their latest EV project, they have partnered with airline Jet2.

Funding for this has been used to develop airport infrastructure, namely on the airside, to help charge electric vehicles in and around the airport.

That consists of four dedicated Jet2.com electric vehicle charging bays and two electric vehicle charging bays for Business Partners.

Simon Earles, Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Director, Bristol Airport said: “We are delighted that another project has been completed with funding from the ACT Programme.

"The collaboration with Jet2.com in providing the electric charging hub in the busy airside aircraft operating area, assists with aircraft turnarounds.

"The range and breadth of projects we are working on is staggering, including new to market technologies, university research programmes, carbon sequestration and energy or propulsion generation.”

Ian Doubtfire, Sustainability and Business Development Director at Jet2.com said: “The introduction of this electric charging hub at Bristol Airport is great news for our electrification programme.

"The hub will play a critical role in enabling us to further reduce our ground-based emissions, which is a stated aim in our sustainability strategy.

"As well as addressing sustainability at every stage of the journey, including on the ground as well as in the air and in resort, steps such as this are a demonstration of how committed we are to taking immediate and tangible actions to make flying more sustainable.”
