A serving police officer has denied the coercive and controlling behaviour and intentional suffocation of a woman.

Pc Mitchell Curtis, 33, appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court to deny two charges of coercive and controlling behaviour alleged to have been committed between February 2021 and October 22 against a woman in the South Gloucestershire area.

The Avon and Somerset Police officer also denied a charge of intentionally suffocating the same woman in July last year.

A fourth charge, which Curtis also pleaded not guilty to, accuses him in April 2022 of damaging the door handle of a car belonging to the same woman.

During the brief hearing Curtis, of Charnhill Drive, Bristol spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and enter his not guilty pleas.

District Judge Lynne Matthews committed the case to Gloucester Crown Court and told Curtis he would next appear on September 7.

She told him: "I am going to admit you to conditional bail. This case is moving to the crown court at Gloucester where the next hearing is on September 7."

Curtis, who was based in Bristol with the force, was suspended from duty in October 2022 after a complaint was made to police.
