Weymouth D-Day 80 commemorations get Town Council support

The authority's given grants to help mark the anniversary

Grants have been given to a number of Weymouth community groups and organisations, to help them mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day this week.

The Town Council's supporting activities to help mark a 'pivotal moment in history'.

Many soldiers left Dorset's coast to travel to Normandy in France and fight for the Allied forces against Nazi Germany in 1944.

Events in Weymouth to honour the anniversary have had financial help from the Town Council, including:

• Weymouth Brownies, who are organising a 1940s-style party for the anniversary

• Holy Trinity Church are hosting a D-Day themed quiz

• St Nicholas Church, Dorchester Road are hosting an afternoon tea event on Saturday, June 8th

• Parish of Wyke Regis, All Saints with St Edmund, are organising 'An Evening To Remember' on Thursday, June 6th

• St Laurence Church, Upwey, holding a 'Celebration of D-Day' in the church car park on Saturday 9th June, 12pm-4.30pm.

Cllr Jon Orrell, Mayor of Weymouth said:

“I am so pleased that these local groups are putting on a variety of events to bring our communities together to honour and remember the significance of D-Day here in Weymouth.

“These events will complement the programme of activities the Council has organised as we commemorate this pivotal moment in history."
