Weymouth beach welcomes motocross racers for 2024 event
The popular races are back, with big crowds expected
Weymouth Beach is hosting the annual Motocross event today (Sunday 20th October), with some big crowds expected.
The beach has been transformed into a motocross course, complete with bumps and jumps.
It's the 40th anniversary of the event this year too, with the first beach motocross held in Weymouth in 1984.
The action starts today at 11.30am, with gates opening at 10.00am.
The first race will be from 1.00pm.
Ryan Hope, President of organisers, Weymouth & Portland Lions Club, said:
"We are thrilled to celebrate 40 years of Weymouth Beach Motocross and to give back to the community that has supported us over the years.
"This event is a fantastic opportunity to bring everyone together for a day of fun and charity, and we invite all motocross fans and families to join us."
Road and Beach closures
The beach will be closed to the public from the Pavilion end to the Jubilee Clock from 8.00am.
This is to allow heavy machinery to come on to the beach and build the sand jumps needed for the motocross.
There will also be road closures that have been put in place by Dorset Council.
No vehicles will be allowed along part of The Esplanade and part of Custom House Quay, Weymouth (in both directions) between 8.00am and 5.00pm today.
The road fronting Devonshire Buildings will be open for access only.
Traffic will be re-routed through the one-way system around Alexandra Gardens to continue on The Esplanade, or use Pilgrims Way for access to Custom House Quay.
