Primark has submitted a planning application to convert the former Wilko store on Westham Road in Weymouth, with plans to open in early 2026.
The shop, which has been vacant since October, would provide around 2,000 square metres of retail space across two floors.
Dorset Council has indicated that the proposal is likely to be acceptable in principle but has advised that some minor design changes may be needed. A council document stated: “The existing elevations of the building appear dated and drab, so your proposals offer an excellent opportunity for enhancements to this part of the conservation area.”
Primark, which currently has its nearest stores in Poole, Bournemouth, and Yeovil, says the new store will increase footfall in the area and encourage further investment. In its application, the company stated:
“As a multi-national anchor store, Primark can bring investment and vitality to the area which in turn will stimulate increased footfall and provide other opportunities for positive change.”
The retailer also said the refurbishment would “enhance the character and appearance of Weymouth Conservation Area and not adversely impact the setting of the Little Meeting House or result in harm to the significance of any of the non-designated heritage assets.”
In a statement released to us last December, Conor Walsh, Director of South West & North East at Primark:
“We're pleased to confirm we plan to open a new store in Weymouth located in Westham Road, taking over the former Wilko building. Work will begin in store over the coming months, and we hope to open our doors in early 2026. We look forward to becoming a part of the local community."
Plans include alterations to the shopfront and rebranding at the upper level of the fascia facing Westham Road. The public can submit comments on the application until mid-April.
