A North Dorset man has launched a petition to save a “vital” adult day care centre at risk of closure.

The Blandford Community Centre is one of six centres that could shut as the council looks to reorganise services.

Rob Mariner - whose wife has dementia and visits the centre twice a week - says moving services to a hub in Sturminster Newton as proposed is "not an acceptable alternative".

He told us: “Blandford is a town of around 10,000 people and there are housing developments going up all over the place so the community is getting bigger.

“How are all the people currently using the several day centres going to fit into one?

“Another concern I have is that changing venues can be difficult for some people, especially if they have complex needs. It can be quite overwhelming.

“Finally, the logistics of getting there and back make it difficult. We're talking about an hour-long round trip just to drop her off."

There are fears that closure of Blandford Centre would leave people isolated and without support as well as end friendships.

Mr Mariner’s feels his petition, which has received more than 1,000 signatures, has “hit a chord with people”.

He said: “We understand that cuts have to be made here, there and everywhere, but many feel its unfair to seemingly target some of the most vulnerable people in society who, if anything, need our care and protection.

“The local day care centre in Blandford represents an oasis for my wife where she gets social interaction, fun and friendship in a completely secure environment.

“Meanwhile, for me, as a caregiver, this centre is a lifeline, providing much needed respite and helping sustain our life together.”

Dorset Council replied: “We want to reassure everyone that no decisions have been made, and we are continuing to explore ways to offer users greater choice and flexibility in their activities, ideally as close to their homes as possible.

“We have said throughout, no-one will be left without a service as a result of these proposals and we strongly encourage users to participate in the consultation process.”
