A man's been assaulted in Christchurch town centre, suffered swelling to his eye and bruising on his head.

The incident happened in Saxon Square just before 1.00am on Sunday 19th September, with the details just released.

It's alleged a man made a comment to the victim, in his 30s, before punching him in the face.

Two members of the public stepped in to help, with the man leaving the scene.

There's now an appeal to identify a man seen in a CCTV image.

Sergeant Simon Rogers, of Dorset Police, said:

“As part of our enquiries, we have obtained an image of a man we would like to identify and would ask anyone who recognises him to please get in touch.

“I am also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed what happened, including the members of the public who intervened, as they may have important information to assist my enquiries.”

Anyone with information about the incident, or the identity of the man pictured, is asked to call Dorset Police on 101, quoting reference number 55240149977.
