Historic Dorset sites reborn as affordable homes for local families
New life for Dorset landmarks as Heritage Sites become affordable homes
Two landmark sites in Chickerell and Dorchester have been transformed into vibrant new communities, breathing life back into spaces once central to Dorset’s heritage.
Both developments were designed to preserve Dorset’s heritage and provide homes people need.
Cllr Gill Taylor, Cabinet Member for Health and Housing, said: “These sites are a fantastic example of how we can shape a future where Dorset’s heritage and housing needs go hand in hand, creating places people are proud to call home.”
The former Ponderosa UK Stud in Chickerell, once a world-renowned centre for racing pigeons, has been turned into a residential development on Green Lane.
The site offers 19 affordable rent homes, comprising of one, two and three-bedroom bungalows and flats for households, allocated through Dorset Council's housing register.
Amanda Williams, Aster Group’s Chief Investment Officer, said: “This is a development steeped in history, and it’s about building a stronger, more inclusive community.
“It gives local families the chance to stay close to their roots, access quality homes, and enjoy the benefits of a well-connected neighbourhood.”
In Dorchester, part of the historic Eldridge Pope Brewery, once the town’s largest employer, has been transformed into The Hops, a vibrant new development offering affordable homes for local families.
The Malthouse block includes 25 homes, with ten affordable rent flats already occupied by residents with strong local ties.
The remaining 15 shared ownership homes have welcomed families connected through residency or employment.
To meet demand for larger homes, the rest of The Hops comprises of two three-bedroom houses and 29 four-bedroom townhouses.
Amanda Williams added: “Dorchester has long faced a shortage of affordable housing.
"With house prices generally higher in Dorset, the shared ownership homes at The Hops provide an accessible way to secure a home with a smaller deposit and long-term security that you don’t often get through renting."
