Firefighters tackle blaze which spread to Dorset heathland

Firefighters have been tackling a car fire on a dual carriageway in Dorset, which spread to nearby heathland.

Teams were called to the A338 near Bournemouth Airport shortly after 13:30 yesterday afternoon (17/8).

The flames were put out by around 17:45 in the evening.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called to the A338 southbound for a car fire that had spread to an area of adjacent heath.

"Due to the conditions, the fire has now spread to two areas of heath off the northbound carriageway.

"As well as our own crews, we have support from Lymington and Ringwood.

"Dorset Police closed both carriageways while firefighters tackle the blaze."

Additional crew were called to the scene from New Milton later that afternoon, until the stop message came it at 17:17.

The northbound carriageway of the A338 remained closed while power lines were checked.
