Hundreds to gather in Dorchester for Halloween themed World Record
A town as old as Dorchester is likely to have ghosts making an appearance!
Dorchester will attempt to break the World Record for most ghosts gathered in a single place this afternoon (Saturday 28th October).
The count starts at 4.30pm and organisers are urging people to come along with an old white sheet so they can smash the record.
Currently held by a school in Tralee, Ireland, the record stands at a mere 560 people which organisers are “confident” they will beat.
Matilda Manley, Dorchester’s Tourism Development Officer, told us how the idea came to fruition, she said:
“We were thinking of things that people can do that don't cost much money and everyone’s got an old white sheet at home or a bit of material, so you just cut holes in it and then join in.”
It is a celebration of Dorchester 'spooky' past and will highlight the affinity residents have with the holiday in a unique way.
“Everybody goes pumpkin picking, but this is something different that makes your Halloween special this year,” Matilda added.
Dorchester, famed for its Ghosts from the bloodthirsty Judge Jeffries to Roman soldiers who patrol the forests, would be a fitting location for such a record.
Matilda said: “We've had gruesome hangings, we've got the ancient prison, there’s a ghost tour in the town that people can go on and try and encounter ghoulish beings, so there's a lot of spooky things in this town.”
“Everyone is talking about the mass ghost gathering,” but as well as the record attempt Brewery Square is hosting an array of activities from pumpkin carving to balloon modelling to keep ghosts and ghouls of all ages entertained.
