Christmas hampers given to homeless dog owners in Dorset
The long-running Hope Project returns to our county
Hampers containing dog collars, treats and other Christmas gifts will be given to dog owners currently experiencing homelessness in Dorset.
The "canine hampers" will include collars, leads, coats, treats and toys for dogs.
It's all part of the Hope Project, an initiative by the Dogs Trust, which has been running for over 25 years after recognising that the bond between a homeless person and their dog is often "unbreakable".
As well as Christmas gifts, the project provides year-round free veterinary care to dogs whose owners are in housing crisis.
Harriet Page, Dogs Trust Pets and Housing Manager said:
“Everyone knows that the bond between a dog and its owner is a strong one but for people experiencing homelessness, the bond is often unbreakable. Christmas can be an especially difficult and lonely time for people in housing crisis.
“However, thanks to the generosity of Dogs Trust supporters, this year we will be able to help over 2,000 celebrate Christmas and support them into the New Year and beyond so that more dogs can stay with their owners, regardless of their housing situation”.
This year, the Hope Project expects to deliver over 2,000 Christmas hampers across the UK - a 24% increase in the numbers since 2021.
The hampers are expected to arrive in Dorset this week.
They will be given to local homeless charities the Bus Shelter in Weymouth, and Michael House in Bournemouth.
