They've been working with Dorset Council to support two families
A Bridport community group has secured the use to two properties in the town, to support a Afghan refugees.
The local Refugee Support Campaign has been working with Dorset Council to bring use private rented homes into use for two families from Afghanistan.
It's been part of the Government's Communities for Afghan (CfA) scheme, which allows local communities to sponsor refugee families, including finding affordable housing and raising funds to support those relocating here for their safety.
The Bridport Refugee Support Campaign helps families with things like school enrolment, medical appointments, and integration into the community including finding voluntary work and prepare for paid employment.
Barry Lovejoy is their Chair and said: “Coming to the UK is not a decision that people make lightly. They have fled war or persecution and have experienced severe trauma.
"They had no choice but to flee the country they were born in. In particular this country owes many Afghans a huge debt for their dangerous work with the British Army in challenging the Taliban.
“By supporting Afghan families with a place to live we can help them to feel properly settled and in time they will become a real part of our community and strengthen diversity in this part of Dorset.”
Cllr David Bolwell represents the Bridport ward for Dorset Council. He said: “Bridport is a rights respecting town which means we strive for a fair, safe, and kind community.
"It is right that we do all we can to support people who find themselves without a home through no fault of their own. I hope that people living in Bridport will support these families to settle in our town and become a real part of the community.”
