A 19 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Weymouth.

Detectives made an arrest after a man in his 70s was found seriously injured in Abbotsbury Road last night.

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area as enquiries into what happened continue.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said:

"Dorset Police received a report at 8.12pm on Tuesday, December 10 of an assault in Abbotsbury Road in Weymouth.

"Officers attended with the ambulance service. The victim, a man aged in his 70s was taken to hospital for treatment to head and facial injuries.

"He remains in hospital in a serious condition. His family has been informed.

"Following fast-time enquiries at the scene, a 19-year-old man from Weymouth was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

"A cordon was put in place to allow for a thorough examination of the area to be carried out.

"There will be an increased police presence in the vicinity while enquiries continue and we would encourage anyone with information or concerns to please speak with an officer."
