A large heard of sheep have been rescued by firefighters after getting stuck on a riverbank in Dorset.

The flock of around 70 got stranded at Fifehead Magdalen near Gillingham yesterday morning.

Two of the sheep remain unaccounted for.

A specialist team of firefighters trained in water rescue from Sturminster Newton, were called out to the scene.

They posted on Facebook about the rescue:

A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"At 11.28am we received a call to sheep that were stuck on a riverbank. A crew from Sturminster Newton and a Tech Rescue Team from Weymouth were mobilised. There were around 70 sheep in total, 66 self-rescued and two were rescued by DWFRS."
