Firefighters responded to reports of three West Midlands homes struck by lightning this morning.

West Midlands Fire Service crews were called to Cardoness Place, Lower Gornal just after 10am this morning. The crew arrived within three minutes.

The fire resulting from the lightning strike damaged around a third of the roof and also affected the first floor. It was extinguished using hose reels by firefighters in breathing apparatus.

Less than an hour later, four fire crews, an aerial platform and a drone team responded to Greenvale Avenue, Sheldon where fire from a lightning strike destroyed the roof of a terraced house. A nearby telegraph pole was damaged by a secondary strike.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We understand that the ambulance service took a neighbour to hospital for precautionary checks, and assessed four more people after a property was struck in nearby Mapledene Road.”
