An Aston Villa fan has been praised for jumping into action when a man collapsed in the stands at last night's Europa Conference League tie at Villa Park.
The medical emergency happened in the Lower Holte End, just before half time. A quick-thinking member of the public began CPR on the man.
Two police officers made their way through the crowd with medics, and the stand was cleared of supporters to allow emergency crews to take over treatment.
In a statement, a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance said: "On-site ambulance staff were alerted to a medical emergency at Villa Park at 8.51pm, a further ambulance and MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene.
"Upon arrival, ambulance staff found a man being cared for by bystanders. They immediately administered advanced life support to him which continued en route to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was conveyed under emergency blue light conditions for further treatment.”
Inspector Marc Butler from West Midlands Police said: "We would like to commend the Villa fans for their support in clearing the area to allow the man to get the help he needed.
"Our officers then transported the family of the man to the hospital.
“We would like to thank all our partners in what was a great example of club, police and ambulance staff working together.
“We wish the fan all the best with his recovery.”
