Trial date set for teenager accused of Walsall railway station murder
19-year-old Deng Chol Majek will face trial in March
A 19-year-old man accused of killing a hotel worker at a railway station has made a further appearance before a Crown Court judge.
Deng Chol Majek, who pleaded not guilty at a previous hearing to the murder of Rhiannon Skye Whyte, was assisted by an Arabic interpreter as he appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court by video-link from HMP Manchester on Friday.
Prosecutors allege Majek, understood to be an asylum seeker originally from South Sudan, used a screwdriver to kill the 27-year-old, who died in hospital three days after being injured at Bescot Stadium station in Walsall, West Midlands, on October 20 last year.
Majek, formerly of Bescot Crescent in Walsall, was further remanded in custody.
Judge Michael Chambers KC told him: "The case is listed for trial at Coventry Crown Court to start on the 17th of March.
"We will have a further hearing - a pre-trial review - on Monday the 3rd of March."
Members of Ms Whyte's family watched the proceedings, which lasted for around 25 minutes, from the front row of the public gallery, as prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC told the court the trial is now expected to take up less than the allocated 10-day time estimate.
