A uniform bank in Birmingham says parents are telling them they can only afford school uniform if it is discounted.

'Simply School Supplies' says it is preparing for it's busiest weeks of the year.

Around £200 per child...

As children start to enjoy the summer holidays, a uniform bank in Birmingham told us it is already hearing from parents that cannot afford new school uniform for September.

Elizabeth Dauncey is director of 'Simply School Supplies': "For the next school year we have already had three requests come in for a full set of uniform.

"A full set of uniform, plus a change of clothes can cost around £200 per child," she said.

"Now is when the sales are"

'Simply School Supplies' gives pre-loved school uniform to families that need it. They run off donations.

Elizabeth explained why parents are already reaching out to them for help: "Now is when the sales are, so struggling families have to buy their uniform now.

"If they miss out on these sales, they are less likely to afford uniform at full-price," she said.

The PE kit 'is the problem'...

Elizabeth said the main problem was the PE kit: " Some schools asks for four different type of PE kit, depending on the sport.

"If a child does not have the right kit, they are not allowed to take part. That is putting a barrier on a child's education.

"If an item is only got one terms-worth of use, is that a wise cost?," she said.

'Simply School Supplies' run a pop-up on the third Sunday of each month at St Columbas CofE Church.
