An investigation has been launched following the death of a man in police custody in the West Midlands.

A 59-year-old man, from the Sandwell area, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning for harassment and taken to Oldbury Police Station.

West Midlands Police say he was then assessed by healthcare professionals, charged and remanded to appear before the courts.

The man was found unresponsive at around 9am yesterday. Custody staff began CPR in a bid to save his life.

He was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

The force says both the man’s family and the local coroner have been informed.

His death in police custody has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
