Hundreds of people joined an anti-racism protest in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter after rumours of a far-right demo targeting a migrant centre.

The crowd gathered on Wednesday evening holding banners reading "Refugees welcome here" and "Stamp out Islamophobia".

There was no sign of any far-right protest, which had been shared on social media as starting at 8pm.

The entrance to the migrant centre, and several other local businesses, including restaurants and shops, had been boarded up before the rumoured protest.

Earlier on Wednesday, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster said in a statement: "I want to make it clear that there is no place for division, hate or racism and it will not be tolerated in the West Midlands.

"My advice to everyone, is that I strongly urge you to avoid gathering at any events and that you allow the police to carry out their essential duties, on behalf of the public.

"Now, more than ever, we must stand together."

Yvette Cooper has thanked police for their response to planned anti-immigration protests across the country.

The Home Secretary said on social media: "Thank you to all the police officers working tonight to protect and support local communities."
