A group in Walsall supporting people struggling to make ends meet is being called a 'life saver' as household bills increase today (1st April).

Ryecroft Community Hub, as part of Walsall Council, offers advice and signposts grants to struggling households who cannot afford to cover the cost of their bills.

How much will my bills increase today?

Energy bills are increasing by 6.4%, meaning the energy price cap will increase to £1,849 per year for those on a standard variable tariff and paying by Direct Debit.

Stamp duty, broadband, mobile phone, TV licence and car tax are some of the other bills going up from today.

A number of local councils are also increasing their council tax, including Shropshire and Wolverhampton who have raised theirs by 4.99%.

"I think I would have been in a lot of debt without them"

Marie started using Ryecroft Community Hub's services, funded by the National Lottery, when she had her fuel allowance cut by the government:

"I got myself into a state, but this group has been a lifesaver for me.

"I think I would have been in a lot of debt without them. I would have ignored letters, but now the people at Ryecroft help me with any letters I do not understand," she said.

"I think everyone is in the same boat at the moment"

Marie explained that her anxiety put her in a situation where she almost did not ask for help:

"Do not be embarrassed, I think everyone is in the same boat at the moment.

"They are friendly here, they offer you a cup of tea and just listen. It is a sigh of relief once you have got it off your chest," she said.

Citizens advice have released information of how to get help if someone is struggling with their energy bills. That can be found here.
