A drink driver has been jailed after killing his friend in a collision in West Bromwich on Christmas Day 2022.
Nirvair Lall, was driving a black Ford Fiesta along Forge Lane on 25 December in the early hours of the morning.
His friend Inderjot Singh, aged 25 was the front seat passenger in the car.
Lall, who had been drinking alcohol prior to the collision, lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree. Tragically Inderjot was declared dead at the scene.
When officers arrived, Lall, aged 25, gave false details and denied being involved in the collision. However, his story then changed, claiming he was a rear seat passenger and the driver made off.
Police had suspicions around his involvement and Lall was arrested.
A roadside breath test was also conducted which he failed.
CCTV footage from earlier on in the evening shows Lall and friends socialising and drinking inside a pub on Park Lane, Hockley. Lall is then seen getting into the driver’s seat of the vehicle with Inderjot as a passenger.
The friends were wearing electronic tags at the time following a release from prison.
Officers retrieved the data stored by the tags which showed just before the collision they were travelling at a speed of nearly 70mph on a 30mph road.
Further enquiries also disproved Lall’s claims about a third person being involved in the collision.
He was charged and then admitted to causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink.
Lall of Amberley Green, Birmingham was jailed for four years and disqualified from driving for seven years at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 11 November.
Detective Constable Gail Arnold from our Serious Collision investigation Unit said: “Lall was driving the vehicle at motorway speeds – more than double the speed limit on the road while intoxicated.
“He was driving in a dangerous manner and ultimately caused the death of his friend.
“This tragic incident shows the real consequences of getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated and our thoughts are with Inderjot’s loved ones.”
Road safety is a priority for us, with teams of officers dedicated to targeting criminals who use the roads and reducing the Fatal 4 offences - speeding, drink-driving, mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt - which are behind many serious collisions.
