A mother who lost her son to knife crime told us she thinks children as young as five need educating on the dangers of knives.

Lynne Baird MBE lost her son Daniel in 2017 when he was stabbed on his way home from visiting The Forge Tavern in Digbeth.

What is a 'bleed control kit'?

She said a bleed control kit nearby would have saved his life.

Bleed control kits provide the necessary tools and supplies to quickly and effectively manage life-threatening bleeding until professional medical help arrives.

Since Daniel's death, Lynne has been campaigning for more bleed control kits throughout Birmingham with the Daniel Baird Foundation.

She told us how she reacts to finding our her kits have saved somebody's life: "I am always ecstatic.

"I am quick to post online to say that we have saved a life, just like we said we would in the beginning," she said.

What does the Daniel Baird Foundation do in schools?

Lynne goes in to schools to explain how the bleed control kits work.

In that way, she said, they act as a preventative measure because the children understand how fatal casualties can be at the hand of a knife.

"The kits we use have been designed by West Midlands Ambulance Service. They have everything they need in them to stop bleeding.

"They are successful at doing that too, because they are exactly the same as what is on the ambulance," she said.

"They may not be so inclined to pick up a knife as they get older"

She explained that children need to be taught how to use the kits as young as possible:

"The younger the better, primary school age is ideal. Once this is in their head, they may not be so inclined to pick up a knife as they get older," she said.

It comes as 16-year-old suffered serious injuries after a stabbing in Bordesley Green over the weekend (15th Feb).

Another 16-year-old was arrested in connection to his death earlier today (17th Feb)
