Birmingham road safety charity calling for more to be done after new RAC figures revealed
407 pedestrians were killed on our roads in 2023.
The chairman of a Birmingham organisation trying to improve road safety says there hasn't been enough investment to keeping roads safe.
There was a 6 percent rise in the number of pedestrian deaths on the roads of Great Britain last year.
407 pedestrians were killed in 2023 - with more than 18-and-a-half thousand injured.
The RAC says the figures should be a red flag to the government, signifying just how dangerous our roads still are.
Chair of Better Streets for Birmingham - Matt MacDonald thinks this has been a missed opportunity and that the satistics aren't surprising.
Matt tells us, more needs to be done to prevent more deaths from happening.
"We need greater legal safeguards for them, so limiting the speed that vehicles can travel at, 20mph speed limits in residential areas for instance.
"We need greater physical protection for people outside of the car, so things like pedestrianised streets or cycle lanes and so on.
"We should get on top of it because there is no justice in the fact that people die in this way. we really do need to do a better job at protecting the most vulnerable road users."
