Community pays tribute to man, 50, following death at Hawick leisure centre

A 50-year-old man has died after taking unwell at Teviotdale Leisure Centre in Hawick.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Mansfield Road after the alarm was raised around 9am on Wednesday.

Police say his death is not being treated as suspicious and a report, detailing the circumstances, will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The centre - which includes a pool, gym and soft play area - closed shortly after the incident and remains closed today (Friday).

The man's been named locally as Steven Weatherly, who's understood to have worked at the centre.

Locals have been left "devastated" by the announcement.

Paying tribute online, one said: "So sad, such a nice man."

Another added: "It's really sad. He was a nice man. He always said: 'Hello'. It's good they've shut for a few days, shows respect for him."

Operator Live Borders said it's actively reaching out to everyone who has booked classes, or those with Learn to Swim sessions, to inform them of the closure, and thanked the public for their "patience and understanding".

A statement posted online added: "Teviotdale Leisure Centre will remain closed on Friday, May 16th."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9am on Wednesday, May 14th, 2025, officers received a report of a man having taken unwell at a premises on Mansfield Road, Hawick.

“Emergency services attended and a 50-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
