Warning as thieves target farms in series of overnight raids

Thousands of pounds worth of equipment and vehicles have been stolen during a series of raids on farms in the Scottish Borders.

Seven properties have been targeted over the past five days.

Three quad bikes, a Mitsubishi pickup, chainsaws and power tools were among the items taken.

The thefts have prompted police to issue a warning to rural communities to secure their valuables and remain vigilant.

A red Honda quad bike was stolen from a farm south of Jedburgh around 10.15pm on Saturday (May 24th).

The suspect, seen riding away at speed, is described as about five foot six inches tall, of slight build, and sporting a black hat or balaclava, black ski salopettes, and light-coloured t-shirt.

The following night, power tools valued at more than £3,000 were stolen during a break-in to a shed at a farm near Grantshouse.

A white Mitsubishi L200 pickup was stolen from another farm nearby, sometime overnight on Monday. The vehicle was later traced by police.

A second quad bike - a red Honda TRX500 - was stolen, along with three Stihl chainsaws, after thieves forced entry to buildings at another farm in the Grantshouse area - near to the A6112 and A1; around 1am on Tuesday (May 27th),

A green Suzuki quad bike was stolen from farm near Auchencrow, around 3am the same night. Three suspects were seen at both incidents.

Two chainsaws valued at more then £3000 were stolen after thieves gained entry to a shed at a farm, near the A6088 road, south of Hawick, sometime overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday (May 28th).

And, shortly before midnight last night, an attempt was made to steal two quad bikes from a farm near Westruther.

A white VW Crafter van and what could have been a white Ford Transit Connect van were seen in the area at the time.

A spokesperson said: "Police Scotland request that the farming/rural community remain vigilant at all times. 

"Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or via the Contact Us section of the Police Scotland website."
