Controversial plans to build a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at a Scottish Borders beauty spot have been shelved.

Last month we reported that Green Switch Energy wanted to build 20 battery containers, 10 transformers, a substation and new access road on land north-east of Sawmill Cottage, off the B6360 road, near Gattonside.

But concerns were raised over the impact it could have on the local landscape and wildlife, as well as any potential fire risk.

A campaign group - notogattonsidebatteries.org - was set up to oppose the plans. One objector posted: "Blows my mind that this is being considered, especially considering how picky the planners are about replacement windows for houses in Gattonside."

The site earmarked for the development is part of a designated National Scenic Area, and borders a stretch of the Southern Upland Way which boasts views over the Eildon Hills and River Tweed, near Melrose.

The development had been earmarked for a site north-east of Sawmill Cottage, Gattonside.

A spokesperson for the company behind the plans told Greatest Hits Radio: "Green Switch Capital confirms that it will no longer be progressing with its proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project near Gattonside.

"Following a review, the project has been discontinued due to a combination of planning and commercial factors.

"We remain committed to supporting the transition to a more resilient and sustainable renewable energy system across the UK and will continue to focus our efforts on other sites aligned with our strategic priorities.

"We continue to explore the potential for future opportunities in the Scottish Borders region.

"We would like to thank all those who engaged constructively throughout the early stages of the project."
