A 42-year-old man has been jailed for seven years for stabbing a dog walker in Hawick.

The High Court in Edinburgh today (Wednesday) heard Paul Weller Aries pounced on his victim outside the Santa Marina restaurant, in the town's Teviot Crescent, on March 26th.

Aries, from Hawick, admitted to assaulting the 43-year-old man to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger of his life.

Police warned the man's injuries could have been much worse without quick medical attention.

Welcoming the sentence, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Aries attacked the victim while he was walking his dog, leaving him with serious injuries. He showed no regard for the man’s life and this incident could have had a much worse outcome.

"Thankfully, the victim was able to quickly get medical attention.

“Aires now faces the consequences of his actions."

He added: “We are committed to tackling all forms of violent crime and the use of offensive weapons. They have a negative influence on our communities and can have a devastating impact on the lives of victims, their families and those who use them. We continue to work with partners to make our communities safer.”
