Police have confirmed a cannabis cultivation has been unearthed in a disused property in the centre of Jedburgh.

Officers raided the former Royal British Legion building in the town's High Street last night (Tuesday).

They say a 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the discovery and enquiries are ongoing.

Police guard the back door entrance of the building, which exits onto Queen Street.

The building - which measures more than 8,000 square feet - remains taped off this afternoon, with officers standing guard at the front and rear of the property, which had been advertised for sale earlier this year.

Staff from Scottish Power Energy Networks are also on the scene.

Locals say there has been a strong smell of cannabis in the town for a number of weeks.

Police have taped off the former Royal British Legion building in Jedburgh.

It's the latest in a series of illegal cultivations discovered in the Scottish Borders in recent times.

In February, we reported police had seized £9.5 million pounds worth of the drug in the region in just 16 months.

22 people were arrested in connection with 12 separate grows, between July 2023 and November last year, and more than half of them - 14 - were Albanian.

Passers-by, out for their shopping, have been expressing their shock at the huge police operation.

Speaking at the time, Detective Chief Inspector Bob Campbell said: “We know the misery that drug misuse can cause and will use every tool and tactic at our disposal to protect the local communities we serve from the dangers of the illegal drug trade.

“Our officers work every day to protect the public by disrupting the cultivation and sale of illegal drugs and preventing them being circulated on our streets. This is vitally important in addressing the concerns of local people.

“Working closely with our partners and business owners, we remain focused on targeting individuals and organised crime groups."

Speaking about the latest discovery, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.35pm on Tuesday (November 4th), officers attended a disused premises in the High Street area of Jedburgh.

“A cannabis cultivation was discovered within and officers remain in attendance.

“A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection and enquiries are ongoing."
