Car found partially submerged 50 metres off Holy Island causeway - as rescue teams scrambled to find owners
Last updated 27th May 2025
Rescue teams scrambled to reports of a car stranded on the Holy Island causeway revealed they found the vehicle partially submerged - 50 metres away.
However, a search of the refuge hut failed to find any trace of its owner.
The in-shore lifeboat from Seahouses was quickly on scene after the alarm was raised around 2.45pm on Monday - more than two hours after the last safe crossing time.
They were supported by Coastguard teams from Holy Island, Berwick and Seahouses.
A spokesperson for Seahouses Lifeboat Station said: "Following a thorough search of the vehicle and obtaining identification to pass to Humber Coastguard, the crew conducted a further search towards the island.
"Holy Island CRT, Berwick Coastguard rescue team & Seahouses Coastguard Rescue Team also in attendance to search for casualties and provide Cascare if necessary.
"During the shoreline search, the ILB was informed by Humber CG that Northumbria Police had located the owners, that they were safe and well on the island, and they were released to return to station to refuel and make ready for service."
Last month, we reported motorists were captured ignoring safe crossing times on the Holy Island causeway - just a day after emergency teams were scrambled to the Northumberland beauty spot to rescue four people, whose vehicles were trapped by the rising tide.
That's despite an ongoing campaign to warn drivers of the dangers.
It's prompted renewed calls for barriers - or traffic lights - to be installed between the island and the mainland.
Interest in the area is expected to increase next month as the island, and its causeway, features in new movie 28 Years Later - which is due to be released in cinemas on June 20th.
