Excitement's building on the Holy Island ahead of the release of new zombie movie 28 Years Later.

The Northumberland beauty spot stars in a trailer for the post-apocalyptic horror film, released this morning (Tuesday).

It's being produced by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, who was pictured shooting scenes for the big-budget blockbuster across the county in the summer.

28 Years Later is the sequel to 2002's 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later.

Featuring the likes of Cillian Murphy, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Erin Kellyman and Jack O'Connell, the latest movie in the franchise is set to hit cinemas in June 2025.

As well as aerial shots of Northumberland's only tidal island, a sign name-checking the Holy Island also features in others showing the causeway, which links it to the main land.

Lindisfarne Castle - which was also used as a location - appears to have been digitally removed from some shots.

But, while other landmarks have also been covered up for filming, a sign advertising the island's Manor House Hotel can be seen in one of the scenes shown in the two-minute trailer.

Manager Sarah Morrison is welcoming the spotlight being shone on the area.

"It's just amazing," she told Greatest Hits Radio.

"They hired out our restaurant for staff getting changed and stuff, and it was exciting seeing all the cast and crew going in and out.

"I think it's great for the island. It's already so busy with tourists; but, once the film is released, there are going to be so many people that want to come who haven't been before."

The Simonside Hills, near Rothbury, also make an appearance near the end of the trailer.

Greatest Hits Radio understands a number of runners from the Scottish Borders volunteered to be extras in the production, after a casting agency issued an appeal for people with "lean strong physiques".

In May, an area near the castle, known as the Lime Kilns, was sealed off for filming.

Photographer Russell Emmerson also shared snaps of what he described as "a new build post Apocalyptic cabin being built and rigged with gas pipes for a staged fire".

It's the latest in a series of big budget productions being shot in our region in recent times.

Three years ago, Harrison Ford was at Bamburgh Castle, further down the coast, to shoot scenes for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which also featured the Leaderfoot Viaduct near Melrose.

Commenting on the first official trailer for 28 Years Later, which has already had more than a million views, one local said: "Cannot wait for this film to come out ❤️"

Another revealed: "We were there when they were filming in May, it was exciting as some of the Islanders were in it. We met Aaron Taylor Johnson, he was lovely."
