A 26-year-old man from Earlston has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for one year, and made the subject of a 12-month supervision order, after attempting to communicate indecently with a 13-year-old girl.

Ryan Foster had sent images of his private parts and videos of him committing a sex act on himself to the teenager.

He also instructed her to remove her clothing and repeatedly requested that she send indecent images and videos to him.

But Selkirk Sheriff Court was told he had in fact been communicating with an undercover police officer posing as the underage girl.

Foster pled guilty to causing a person pretending to be a child to view a sexual image; and causing them to receive sexual communication.

The offences took place at his home and elsewhere between May 4th and 31st, 2023.

In addition, Foster also pled guilty to possession of indecent photographs, or pseudo-photographs, of children between September 2020 and January 2024.

He also admitted breaching his bail by using a private browser on a mobile device to disguise his internet history.

Sheriff Ian Anderson noted Foster was a first offender, and had sought help from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation - a child protection charity.

As part of the supervision order imposed today (Monday), Foster is banned from having any contact with children - directly or indirectly - without prior approval.

He must also notify police of any device he has capable of accessing the internet, and allow them to be searched at any time.
