Some fans of The Smiths are wondering if a reunion is on the cards

Mysterious post on band’s Facebook sends some fans into a tizzy…

A seemingly innocuous post on The Smiths’ official Facebook page has stirred up some strong feelings among fans, with some suggesting it might even herald a band reunion.

The post itself simply asked fans to ‘sign up for The Smiths mailing list’.

One commenter wryly noted, “Just getting your monthly letter that reads ‘still broken up, thanks’”, but others have suggested that it could precede some sort of announcement.

“Does this mean what I think it means?” asked one follower. “Please please please let me let me let me get what I want this time,” added another, with a praying hands emoji, while a third was more direct and posted, “Tour coming?”

And another bluntly asked: “Unless you're reforming and touring, what's the f------ point?”

One fan suggested that: “If they did a reunion tour it would be comparable to Oasis!”

Guitarist Johnny Marr recently revealed he had turned down an ‘eye-watering’ sum for a reunion.

Speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast in June he said: “We got made an offer recently, but I said no. It was a little bit about principles, but I’m not an idiot, I just think the vibe’s not right.

“It was an eye-watering amount of money, but also, I really like what I’m doing now which makes it a lot easier. I like where I’m at. I still want to write the best song I’ve ever written. I want to be a better performer.”

Morrissey said last year that AEG Entertainment group offered surviving members of The Smiths “a lucrative offer” to organise a worldwide tour.

The singer said this was something he was interested in pursuing, but it ultimately fell through as “Marr ignored the offer”.
