Netflix's record-breaking hit show Wednesday is set to return with a second season, with the streaming platform now sharing some behind-the-scenes footage from the upcoming series' production, offering us our first look at Jenna Ortega getting back into character as the infamous Wednesday Addams, alongside the world-renowned Tim Burton.

It's fair to say that Wednesday was an absolute hit with fans following season one's release in 2022 - breaking a huge streaming record on the platform and leaving fans chomping at the bit for any information on season two - well, with filming well and truly underway, we've been gifted with 12 new cast members, and now an official first look at the 'bigger and more twisted' second season.

In a joint post between Netflix and the official Wednesday account, bosses wrote: 'I shouldn’t be showing you this, but I'm feeling generous.' With cast members welcoming us to the season two set, Catherine Zeta Jones, who plays matriarch Morticia Addams, promises it to be: "Bigger and more twisted than you can ever imagine".

After watching the cast members snap back into character, we see director Tim Burton - who recently worked with Jenna to bring us the incredible Beetlejuice sequel earlier in September - hail "action", before the Wednesday actress teases: ""If we showed you anymore, your eyes would bleed."

The spooky teen then quips: "And I’m not that generous."

The sneak peek closes off with Jenna's iconic Wednesday stare, with Tim adding: "Okay, I think we got it" from behind the camera lens. Although no exact date is given, the streaming simply added: 'Coming 2025'.

Are there new cast members in Wednesday season two?

There certainly are - plenty, in fact! The series - which is a spin-off of the ever-popular The Addams Family - is still continuing production, with the streaming platform revealing in May 2024 a selection of huge names which will be joining the cast - including Joanna Lumley, Billie Piper, Steve Buscemi and the legendary Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester 1991's original Addams Family film.

Who are the new cast members?

With the help of Thing, Netflix shared a teaser video on 7th May announcing several new names that would be joining the cast, alongside starring actress Jenna Ortega.

The 12 new cast members include:

Joanna Lumley (Fool Me Once, Absolutely Fabulous)

Steve Buscemi (The Big Lebowski)

Christopher Lloyd (Addams Family, Back to the Future)

Billie Piper (Scoop)

Thandiwe Newton (Westworld)

Heather Matarazzo (The Princess Diaries, Scream)

Evie Templeton (Return to Silent Hill)

Owen Painter (Tiny Beautiful Things)

Noah Taylor (Law & Order: Organized Crime)

Frances O’Connor (The Missing, The Twelve)

Haley Joel Osment (The Kominsky Method)

Joonas Suotamo (Star Wars)

Jenna Ortega is of course returning to her infamous role of Wednesday Addams, while Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo have all been upped to series regulars for the second instalment of the show.

As well as the quirky video announcing new names joining the show's line-up, Netflix also released a cast photo for the upcoming season, showing the new names on set.

When was series two announced?

Despite reports that the show could be leaving Netflix, the streaming giant delighted fans on Friday 6th January 2023, confirming series two is coming! The post read: 'Wednesday has been officially renewed for Season 2!'.

Earlier that day, Netflix shared a short teaser clip for the second series with main actress Jenna Ortega. The clip shows Wednesday Addams sat at her type-writer, writing the words "The end" with a "?" following, accompanied by some spooky music.

Release date:

The first series of Wednesday premiered globally on Netflix on Wednesday 23rd November 2022.

There's so far been no confirmed release date for series two of Wednesday - although we do know that production has now begun, and that it will definitely land in 2025.

What streaming record did Wednesday break?

A week after the show landed on the streaming platform in 2022, it was revealed that Wednesday had already broken Netflix records, racking up the most hours viewed in a single week of any Netflix TV show ever - a record previously held by the fourth season of Stranger Things.

Netflix confirmed the news in a statement, saying: 'Being an outcast has never been more IN as Wednesday, the supernatural infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams' years at Nevermore Academy, debuted in the #1 spot with a record-breaking 341.2M hours viewed.'

They continued: 'The series now holds the record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series on Netflix.'

Back in June 2022, Stranger Things season four broke the record, previously held by period drama Bridgerton season two. The record is for the most-watched English-language TV series, with Squid Game being the overall most popular title.

What is the show about?

The series was created by Tim Burton and stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, along with Jenna Ortega, Luis Guzmán, and Isaac Ordonez, in the well-known roles of Morticia, Wednesday, Gomez and Pugsley Addams.

The trailer, released back in August, teased Wednesday Addams on her own for the first time, having been expelled from the human high school, because of an incident involving piranhas in the swimming pool!

After being sent off to a school for unique students, Wednesday finds herself at Nevermore Academy along with some other teens, who could be just as unusual as she is... 👀.

Before the series dropped, Netflix teased what we could expect from the show, sharing a black and white photo of the four iconic characters on Instagram, simply writing: '@wednesdaynetflix teaser coming tomorrow...'.

The streaming giant also shared the same pic to their Twitter account writing: 'Say hello to Netflix's Addams Family Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jenna Ortega, Luis Guzmán, and Isaac Ordonez star in Wednesday, the new series from Tim Burton.'

Responding to the first look at Wednesday, fans have been commenting on Netflix's social accounts, with one writing: 'AHHHHHHH SO EXCITED' (sic), and another saying: 'I’m screaming'.

Although Jenna Ortega had previously been revealed to play the title role, this was the first time fans had seen the rest of the family, with many excited to see Catherine Zeta-Jones in another lead role, having previously appeared as Dr Vivian Capshaw in Prodigal Son last year.

One wrote: 'Catherine!!!😍', with one more writing: 'Omg catherine zeta-jones like morticia i think she born for that character'. (sic)

Although Thing didn't feature in the first photos, Netflix revealed its very own trailer!

Fans were also over the moon with the return of Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in The Addams Family (1991) and its sequel in Addams Family Values (1993). Now, Christina won't be the only returning Addams Family face, with Christopher Lloyd, who played the original Uncle Fester, joining for season two.

Earlier in 2022, Netflix Geeked tweeted: 'yes, it’s true, the magnificent Christina Ricci is joining the cast of the new Wednesday Addams series as an exciting new character snap snap'.

It was then confirmed that she will play the role of Marilyn Thornhill.

Who was in the cast of Wednesday season one?

The full season one cast included Jenna Ortega (Wednesday Addams), Gwendoline Christie (Principal Larissa Weems), Jamie McShane (Sheriff Galpin), Percy Hynes White (Xavier Thorpe), Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Naomi J Ogawa (Yoko Tanaka), Moosa Mostafa (Eugene Ottinger), Georgie Farmer (Ajax Petropolus), Riki Lindhome (Dr. Valerie Kinbott), with Christina Ricci (Marilyn Thornhill).
