Following the dramatic sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale, which aired last year, fans have been desperately awaiting news on its sequel. As of 8th April 2026, the wait is finally over, as The Testaments is now streaming exclusively on Disney+, after production began in spring 2025 and wrapped later that summer.

Posting to social media on its world premiere date, the show's account wrote: 'Welcome to Gilead. The first 3 episodes of THE TESTAMENTS are now streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. #TheTestaments', as we hear from the cast.

Watch The Testaments trailer:

The trailer follows a post on 3rd December which showed a snippet of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) reading from Margaret Atwood's iconic books, The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments, alongside the caption: 'We’re just getting started. #TheTestaments is coming to Hulu in 2026.'

Hulu announced on Tuesday 1st April 2025, that some familiar faces would appear in the new series, including Ann Dowd, who has reprised her iconic role as Aunt Lydia.

Set years after The Handmaid's Tale ended, June's daughter Hannah (also known as Agnes) is now played by 25-year-old Chase Infiniti. She took to Instagram on Saturday 16th August to share a picture outside her set trailer, writing: 'see you soon agnes 💜 that's a wrap on season one of the testaments.' (sic)

How was the sequel announced?

In a post on Instagram on Tuesday 1st April 2025, Hulu wrote: 'It’s official! The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, starts production April 7. Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia with Elisabeth Moss as an executive producer of the series. Follow @TestamentsonHulu for more!'

The news was not completely unexpected, with many predicting there would be more of the story to come, in line with Margaret Atwood's book series of the same name. But now Hulu have officially given the sequel the green light.

Will June Osborne return in The Handmaid's Tale sequel?

After keeping very hush about her return, it's now confirmed that June Osborne will reprise her role as Elisabeth Moss for the spin-off, as well as exec produce the series.

What is it about?

Set years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments follows a new generation of young women in Gilead, who are grappling with the bleak future that awaits them.

It's now been revealed the series will follows young teens Agnes, dutiful and pious, and Daisy, a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead’s borders.

A synopsis for the show says: 'As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future.

'For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world prior to their indoctrination into this life. Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve.'
