After three years, Harry Styles sent the world into overdrive by dropping his amazing single 'Aperture' in January 2026. The former One Direction singer also announced his fourth album that month, revealing that 'Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally' would arrive in March.

'Aperture' was released at midnight on Friday 23rd January and marked Harry's first single since his 2023 track 'Satellite'. Here's everything you need to know about the hit.

Harry Styles interview: What has he said the song 'Aperture' means?

Speaking to Hits Radio, Harry revealed that making the album was a "really important time" for him, opening up about taking time away from the spotlight: "I learned a lot about like myself and the way that I wanted to work and stuff going forward."

He went on to say that as they progressed with the album, he realised that he was playing 'Aperture' as the first song to them, which helped him come to the conclusion it would be the first track on the record as that's what he "wanted to set the tone with".

"It felt natural. This is what I want people to hear first to set the stage for it," he explained.

Of course, the word "aperture" is a photography term for how much light is let into the lens, and Harry spoke to us about his love for photography: "I always have a camera with me. I go through phases of using it a lot and then not using it very much.

"I found a camera while I was travelling last year with some film in it that had three pictures from one Christmas, four pictures from the next Christmas and then pictures from months and months later. It's nice snapshots."

Harry even revealed that he'd unearthed some pictures he'd taken from his 1D days: "I'm really glad that I've done that because there are some pictures that I find sometimes from when I was touring with One Direction that I forgot I'd taken."

Is there a music video?

Yes, there is, on the same day the song was released the music video was released, arriving at 5pm on 23rd January. It was directed by Aube Perrie who also directed Harry's videos for 'Satellite' and 'Music For A Sushi Restaurant'.

Facts about the music video

According to TMZ, Harry performed the majority of his own stunts in the video, with a production source telling the publication that he even performed the staircase fall which reportedly took six hours to perfect. The crew built a "soft staircase" to protect Harry while he took on the stunt.

They also report that it was filmed over three days at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, where many famous films and music videos have been shot. Apparently, the song was never played while filming took place, with all the performance happening to the backing of a click track to keep time.

The character of "The Stranger" in the music video was undertaken by Danny Dolan, an actor and dancer who is based in Los Angeles, with the choreography being orchestrated by Ryan Heffington - who is the brains behind Sia's music video for 'Chandelier' and many other impressive performances.

Aube Perrie was the director of the video, and has also worked on 'Angel of My Dreams' by JADE, 'Lost!' by RM from BTS as well as Harry's own 'Music for a Sushi Restaurant' and 'Satellite'.

What does the video for 'Aperture' mean?

Essentially, it seems as though Harry is exploring his relationship with his fans through the song and the video for 'Aperture'. "The Stranger" seems to represent his experience of being mobbed - and he goes through a process of initially running from it, then confronting and fighting it, before embracing it in euphoria and joy - then being left slightly wistful at the end.

The video begins with Harry in a hotel room on the phone, then leaving as it continues to ring. He goes to the reception desk, but a sign reads "will return soon" and he notices someone walk past, who later follows him up an escalator.

While a hotel is, of course, a large building, the enclosed nature of it can feel claustrophobic - and it certainly was for Harry back in his One Direction days, as the lads used to be holed up in hotels to keep them safe from screaming fans. Die hard 1D fans will remember the lyric 'Living out of cases, packing up and taking off' from the song 'Don't Forget Where You Belong' which references this too.

This is something Harry has spoken out about in interviews while promoting 'Aperture' and his album, saying in a recent radio interview that his overarching feeling was that staying in hotel rooms had meant he "couldn't do things" he wanted to do in his life.

Harry begins to notice The Stranger has followed him, and as they come face to face, The Stranger runs at him across the room and chases him through the hotel. This is clearly meant to represent Harry's earlier fear of being mobbed, and as the pair take a very long tumble down some stairs (the aforementioned staircase fall), the fight continues.

After a short break, the tables turn and Harry runs at The Stranger - who immediately picks him up and puts him in the "Dirty Dancing" lift above his head. Harry's face shows pure euphoria as he's swung around in the air, and the two of them then perform an incredible dance routine as the lyrics "we belong together" can be heard.

This could mean that Harry had a moment of euphoria and clarity about his fans, as he then pursued The Stranger, and their dance routine reflects Harry's newfound realisation that "we’re all here for the same thing - to stand in a room with strangers and dance and get sweaty and sing," as told in a recent radio interview.

They retrace their steps in reverse, dancing together down the corridors that they previously fought in, and although The Stranger is still slightly aggressive with their movements, they stay behind him at all times and there's only physical contact at Harry's initiation.

One of these points is where Harry appears to bite The Stranger's hand, who then swings him round - and a commenter on YouTube interpreted this as "biting the hand that feeds him", meaning that he's acknowledging he's perhaps appeared ungrateful to those who supported him.

He then returns to his hotel room, looking slightly bereft and hums "we belong together" to himself.

What do the lyrics mean?

In a similar vein to the music video, it appears as though Harry is discussing his renewed love for his fans. Taking some time away over the past couple of years has apparently done him the world of good, and now that he's "allowed" himself to "say yes" and "do more", it sounds as though he can now appreciate the love from his fans, despite it being overwhelming and, frankly, dangerous at the beginning of his career.

In the chorus, we hear Harry sing: 'It's best you know what you don't', which could be a realisation that it can be better to understand what your limitations are - or even how much of a situation you can control - and find acceptance and peace... Which is what it sounds like Harry's been doing for the past couple of years.

This line is followed by: 'Aperture lets the light in' - we know that Harry's a big photography fan, and this practice can sometimes be interpreted as having a barrier between you and the world, seeing life through a lens rather than with your own eyes. But "letting the light in" could be literally "seeing the light" - as in, he's come to terms with, understands and ultimately embraces his life.

He then sings: 'We belong together / It finally appears it's only love', which sounds like a moment of realisation and relief. He and his fans "belong together", and he's accepted that all the madness that comes with his career path stems from a place of love. This song truly feels like a celebration of life and love!
