Everything we know about Wicked: For Good ✨
It's out TODAY!
The Wicked movie was one of the biggest films to hit the big screen in recent years - and now we can see the much-anticipated second instalment! Released on Friday 21st November, fans will be flocking to cinemas to finally see the second half of the global phenomenon... Which will contain the two leads singing beloved hit 'For Good'.
Following the news that Ariana Grande would be starring in the long-awaited movie musical alongside Cynthia Erivo in 2021, excitement has only continued to grow - especially after the release of the final full-length trailer for Wicked: For Good in October.
The first part of the magical film franchise arrived in UK cinemas in November 2024, with For Good dropping a year later in November 2025. As the first movie has a Golden Globe and TWO BAFTAs under its belt, it's fair to say that anticipation for the second instalment has been sky high. Here's everything you need to know about the two Wicked movies.
Wicked movies: Release dates
Part one of Wicked was released in UK cinemas on Friday 22nd November 2024, while part two (entitled For Good) came out almost exactly a year later on Friday 21st November 2024.
The films have seen plenty of release dates over the past few years, with confirmation that it would be headed for a 2019 and 2021 release before the global pandemic put paid to that. Then, in April 2022, director Jon M. Chu confirmed that the original plan for one standalone film was to be scrapped in favour of a two-parter.
Releasing a statement, he wrote: ‘Here's what happened: as we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it.
'As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!!
'With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters. Cynthia, Ariana, and I - and all of the cast and crew - pledge to create nothing less than an experience that honors its foundation for all the fans who've waited for this movie, and to offer a thrilling, fantastical world full of dynamic characters that invites in those who are unfamiliar.’(sic)
The two films were then rumoured for Christmas Day releases in 2024 and 2025 consecutively, before the first part was brought up to 27th November 2024, and eventually being released on Friday 22nd November 2024, with the second part coming out on Friday 21st November 2025.
Who is in the cast?

Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible
Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande lead the film adaptations which has been in the works at Universal Studios since 2004.
Jon M. Chu shared the news on Twitter back in November 2021: 'Goooood Newwwws!!! The incredible #CynthiaErivo and @ArianaGrande will be our Elphaba and Galinda in @WickedMovie @UniversalPics Get ready for a match up like you’ve never seen!!! In pink and green!!!' (sic)
Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, the misunderstood 'Wicked Witch of the West', Cynthia won a Grammy and a Tony Award for her role as Celie in the Broadway transfer of the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of The Color Purple. She also received two Oscar nominations for the film Harriet and an Emmy nomination for her role as Aretha Franklin in Genius: Aretha.
Before Ariana Grande was the international pop star we know today, she appeared on Nickelodeon shows Victorious and Sam & Cat and she actually started her career in the Broadway production of Jason Robert Brown's 13 the musical.
Are Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel in the Wicked film adaptation?
They certainly are! Kristen, who originated the role of Glinda, and Idina, who originated the role of Elphaba, have cameos in the first film as performers during the 'One Short Day' scene.
They aren't the only famous faces to make cameos in the films - renowned and legendary composer Stephen Schwartz (who wrote the original Wicked soundtrack) is an Emerald City Guard who proclaims the famous line: "The Wizard will see you now!"
Winnie Holzman, who wrote the original musical's book as well as co-writing the two films' screenplays, appears as a member of the crowd in Oz, and Alice Fearn, who played Elphaba on London's West End between 2017-2019 plays Glinda's mother. Kerry Ellis, who originated the role of Elphaba in the UK, is also rumoured to be appearing in For Good.
What is Wicked about?
Wicked is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and tells us the story of the relationship between Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) from The Wizard of Oz before Dorothy landed.
In this story we see how the pair meet at school, eventually become friends and the rift that grows when the pair share a love interest and have separate responses to the Wizard's corrupt government - which leads to Elphaba being branded as the Wicked Witch.
Who wrote the music?
The music and lyrics of Wicked were written by Stephen Schwartz. He told RadioTimes.com in December 2023 that it had been a "complete joy" to work on the film adaptations. He said: "The creative team, led by Jon Chu, has been fantastic, and I have a great music team, many of whom came from the show originally.
"And then we have this phenomenal cast – particularly our leading ladies in Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are such great singers, such great musicians and wonderful human beings to work with. It's just been a privilege to be able to write with the voices of Cynthia and Ariana in mind."
Stephen is also renowned for his musicals Godspell, Pippin and The Prince of Egypt.

It was announced in October 2024 that ‘Wicked: The Soundtrack’ would be released via Republic Records / Verve Records on 22nd November, to coincide with the film’s arrival in cinemas. Who else worked on the film?
The film is directed by Jon M. Chu who is best known for directing the film Crazy Rich Asians. However, this wasn't his first musical as he has already directed the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, so we know Wicked is in safe hands.
Stephen Schwartz worked alongside Winnie Holzman - who wrote the musical's book - on the film's screenplay. Mark Platt who produced the musical also produce the film versions.
With the films plunging us into the magical Land of Oz, fans were surprised to hear from director Jon M. Chu that the movies did NOT use CGI or blue-screen. Instead, the film production used real, large-scale sets to bring the magic to the big screen.

In April 2023, bosses upped the ante as they began teasing imagery from the film. The film's official Instagram released some first look images from the upcoming movies, giving us a glimpse of Ariana and co-lead Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba for the first time. At the time, bosses shared two separate images - however, these have sadly now been removed from Instagram.
Captioning the image of Ariana as Glinda with a simple '💖', Cynthia's post - showing her as Elphaba - was appropriately captioned with the contrasting emoji: '💚'.
With director Jon M. Chu also sharing the two images to his own Instagram, he wrote: 'You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? FIRST LOOK of the #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz. 🌪️🫧🧹.'
Have either of the films won an award?
They certainly have! At the 2025 Golden Globe awards in January, Wicked took the title for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. It went up against huge hits, including Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II, Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Inside Out 2, Twisters and The Wild Robot — and came home victorious.
Both Cynthia and Ariana were also nominated for awards; Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.
In February 2025, Wicked picked up two BAFTA Awards — one for Costume Design and the other for Production Design. The movie had been nominated in a number of categories, including Leading Actress (Cynthia Erivo) and Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), but the pair lost out to Mikey Madison and Zoe Saldaña.
With a Golden Globe and two BAFTAs under its belt already, everyone involved in Wicked was thrilled to find out the movie was up for Best Picture in the 97th Academy Awards, which took place in March 2025.
The two lead roles both secured nominations too, with Cynthia nominated for Actress in a Leading Role and Ari shortlisted for Actress in a Supporting Role. Sadly they didn't secure any wins at the ceremony, but the pair did wow crowds with a performance of songs from the movie, including 'Defying Gravity' and 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'.
In a post when the nominations were first announced, Ari posted on Instagram to say she was 'humbled and deeply honoured':
Behind-the-scenes photos and videos

WATCH: Wicked 'Passion Project' behind-the-scenes:
As widely reported, in May 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike, which represents 11,500 screenwriters. Paired with the writers' strike of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), as part of a larger Hollywood labour complaint, this fuelled the largest interruption to both TV and film production in the US since the Coronavirus pandemic.
With the WGA strike coming to an end in September 2023, and the SAG-AFTRA strike ending two months later in November, filming for the Wicked movie was paused, as many members of the cast were unable to work due to being bound by SAG-AFTRA contracts.
Jonathan Bailey revealed that, while his co-stars Ariana and Cynthia were out of action, he was one of few on set, but ploughed on to complete some of his shots as Fiyero.
Speaking to SiriusXFM’s Andy Cohen, Jonathan revealed: "I think we had 10 days left filming before the strike hit. I was the only actor who was on an Equity contract, so I had these four days where I came up and acted with people in wigs, who were pretending to be (the other characters)."
Is there going to be a Wicked spin-off?
Although nothing has been confirmed, producers have revealed they're considering spin-offs or sequels to further explore some of Oz's popular characters. Chief marketing officer, Michael Moses from Universal, said in a recent interview with Vulture that "there are things underway.”
Meanwhile, composer Stephen Schwartz told The Ankler he believed, although Glinda and Elphaba's story "feels complete", "there are other aspects that could be explored.”

London's St Pancras station Christmas tree
On 5th November 2024, Universal Pictures unveiled a massive Emerald City Christmas tree at London's St Pancras station. The huge green structure was built as a clever marketing tool for the movie — and came complete with a yellow brick road and windows to peek inside to see a mini version of the city.
The tree also had a seating area inside, where you could sit and listen to the movie soundtrack. Unsurprisingly, Londoners (and tourists) immediately flocked to grab pics and videos with the tree!
